PUPILS at Bratton Primary School have had a busy term, with children enjoying a WWII VE Day party, celebrating British Science Week, taking part in a sponsored bounce to mark National Leap Day, as well as raising money for Comic Relief.
A spokesperson for the school said, “To celebrate British Science Week, we arranged a whole week of stimulating activities to enhance the week with an online live lesson across the school, a visit featuring live awesome, dangerous experiments with Dr Marsh from Bath University, and finally the inflation of an actual hot air balloon inside the school hall!
“The children’s excellent task-related work was noted during a special science-themed assembly, and certificates were awarded for excellence. All the science themed activities certainly added value to the children’s learning, and created a real wow factor – it’s certainly not every day you get to climb inside a hot air balloon at school!
“We are already planning on running this amazing activity again in the summer months on the school field with an even bigger hot air balloon, which we are all very excited about!
Leap year bounce
“To celebrate National Leap Day, we arranged a sponsored bounce; we couldn’t let leap year go by without marking this four yearly event and letting the children have some fun!
“The aim of the sponsored bounce was to complete as many bounces on a space hopper as possible within one minute. It sounded easy, but it was trickier than first thought! Space hoppers were bouncing everywhere across the school grounds.
“A big thank you to Miss Hall, class teacher, for running the bounce event and to the school’s sport ambassador children for helping with the counting. Thank you to everyone at home who kindly donated, with £412 raised, which will be spent in school to buy additional items for the children to enjoy!
Comic Relief
“For Comic Relief, the task was to wear something funny for money, and the staff and children didn’t disappoint! Lots of wacky, silly outfits which made everyone smile for this amazing cause. Thank you to everyone who kindly donated to our Comic Relief fundraiser. By wearing something funny for money, we raised £104 for the charity!
VE Day party
“In the final week of term, Key Stage 2 finished their WW2 topic by learning about and re-enacting VE Day! Children made individual flags during their art sessions and celebrated with rationed war food, including spam and trench cake, while listening to wartime music in the school hall.
“After the food tasting, the children played 1940s games on the playground and finally finished the event by singing wartime songs in the hall, led by Mrs Gurr, our music lead. We were rather surprised to discover so many children who enjoyed the spam, with some children even requesting extra! Thank you to all the KS2 staff for making this history project so memorable and hands-on.”
