The Gentlemen of St John’s are a Gramophone award-winning choral ensemble, founded 40 years ago from the music scholars at St John’s College Cambridge.
Now giving concerts all over the world, they are coming to perform at Edington Priory Church on Friday 10th April, starting at 7.30pm.
They will present a programme of two very different halves. The first half presents the wonderful devotional sound pictures of sacred anthems by composers from Tallis and Byrd to Matthew Martin (who directs the Nave Choir at the Edington Festival) and Franz Biebl.
These are followed by a selection of folksongs and close harmony arrangements which will be introduced by members of the choir. Their versatile combination of musical styles has earned them a seriously good reputation for tone and control, and BBC Music Magazine describes them as, “An immaculately blended, responsive, interactive consort.”
Many former ‘gents’, as they are known, have taken part in the Edington Music Festival over the years, and have also been part of the musical entertainment at the midweek Edington Festival supper. Their list of former members reads like a ‘who’s who’ of the contemporary world of serious music. If you enjoy superb music sung superbly, this is definitely a concert you should not miss.
Tickets are £20/15/10 if booked in advance, with 18 and under FREE. Tickets bought on the door will be an extra £2.
