CIVIC awards have been presented to Westbury people to thank them for their contribution to the town over the past year.
Mayor of Westbury, cllr Sue Ezra presented the awards to Steve and Katherine Carrington, Jan Ball, Linda O’Grady, and Dr Debbie Beale at the mayor’s reception last Friday, while a youth civic award was presented to Charlotte Waghorn.
Cllr Ezra presented the awards to all the winners and said, “It gives me great pleasure in presenting these awards to members of our town who work so hard for us all.”
Steve and Katherine Carrington were presented with an award, which was also dedicated to the Rotary Club of Westbury and all the volunteers who helped clean and paint the White Horse last year.
Jan Ball, headteacher of Westbury Infants School, was named as a “busy and very effective headteacher” and thanked for her dedication to the town’s next generation.
The White Horse Health Centre in Leigh Park opened in September and Dr Debbie Beale and her team were recognised for their persistence and planning to bring the new facility to Westbury.
Linda O’Grady, who recently stepped down as chair of governors at Matravers School, received an award for the “quiet but effective” contribution she has made during a time of change and improvement at Matravers School.
Charlotte Waghorn is a member of CAYPIG (Community Area Young People’s Issues Group) and the youth centre, and Matravers sixth form. She attends and presents items at area board meetings, and has been involved in meetings of the campus steering group. She was awarded for her interest and concern in the town and its future.
The assembled guests also helped to raise money for the mayor’s two charities, Dorothy House Hospice Care and the Alzheimer’s Society. Representatives from both the charities gave a presentation to explain their work and why the money raised is so important in continuing to carry out their valuable work. A raffle which was held at the reception raised over £500, which will be split between the mayor’s charities.
Cllr Sue Ezra also thanked and made presentations to her town clerk, Keith Harvey, and all the town hall team for their hard work throughout the year and in organising her reception.
