AN scheme to bring a neglected listed building in Westbury back to life has been praised by town planners.
The proposal to modernise and bring 68 Leigh Road up to habitable condition was unanimously approved by the town council’s highways, planning and development committee at its recent meeting.
The property was originally built as an annexe to number 70 for accommodation for a member of the family, but it has since fallen into “a very poor state of repair” and a lean-to on the verge of collapse, a statement with the plan says.
“I think this is a very well thought out plan- it will be sensitively done,” cllr Jane Russ said, proposing support. “It would be so easy for this to be horrendous but I think it will work really well and it will bring this absolutely sadly neglected property back to some semblance of the 21st century.”
Cllr Sheila Kimmins seconded and Cllr Gordon King said, “This is a beautiful building and a real statement of Westbury’s history contained in that building. I would be appalled if there was any variation that alters / changes / re-interprets that history. That history should be recognised.”
