WESTBURY Ladies had their first away game, and they were blessed with beautiful weather for a hard-fought match against Crewkerne Ladies.
Sadly, Westbury Ladies were struggling for numbers due to Covid and holidays, and so they were very grateful when Crewkerne were able to lend them a couple of players. This did mean that the decision was taken for scrums to go uncontested.
Rugby flowed well, but when Crewkerne had possession, they put Westbury Ladies’ defence under pressure and eventually it gave way and they scored, unconverted. This was quickly followed by a second which was converted, making the score 12-0.
Sam Eley was in at nine, her first game in the position. She was able to challenge Crewkerne with breaks from the maul. There were also some fantastic lines, with the ball passing through multiple players as Westbury Ladies made good ground. However, a try for Westbury was elusive in the first half.
Crewkerne kicked off the second half in a similar style to the first and they soon scored and converted it, making the score 19-0. They would have scored another, but Laurie Clothier chased down the potential try scorer, putting her under pressure and causing her to spill the ball.
In the latter part of the game Westbury Ladies were more in control, but Crewkerne held strong, with the final score remaining 19-0.
Westbury Ladies would like to congratulate Holly Morgan and Grace Baker who had their first game for the team. The forward of the match was Rebekah Trevis-Smith and the back of the match was Sam Eley.
On Saturday 23rd October Westbury Ladies will be having a friendly with K.O at 10.30am as part of the Lions Roadshow which sees rugby stars James Haskell, Mike Tindall, Jason Robinson, Emily Scarratt and Alex Payne coming to the club.
