THERE will be a chance to try croquet at the Wiltshire Air Ambulance Open Day at Leighton Sports Centre on Saturday 14th September.
Over 14 weeks of the summer, a group of people met at the Leighton to play croquet. Organisers report, “There were six people for whom croquet was a new activity. We were blessed with fair weather except for one day when thunder storms prevented the sessions taking place.
“We played the two main versions of the game which are golf croquet and association croquet and people were able to try out both. Everyone enjoyed the informal and congenial atmosphere and the two competitive weeks which we held at the end of the season. We had the benefit of the loan of a croquet set from the South West Federation section of the Croquet Association and had some free coaching from one of the official coaches too. There was one trip to our most local Croquet Association club, where we also had use of equipment and the services of coaching staff.
“Thanks go to the manager and staff at the Leighton Recreation Centre who were all unfailingly supportive. We also appreciate the opportunity to take part in the Open Day on 14th September when anyone can come to discover what is on offer at the centre and can try out their croquet skills too. We look forward to further sessions when the grass cutting season begins in spring next year.”
