WESTBURY’S deputy mayor recently visited an alternative school on the outskirts of Westbury, and wrote to White Horse News to say how impressed he was with the work it is doing.
Tumblewood School, in Heywood, is a residential and day school for girls who have been victims of emotional trauma. It teaches a maximum of 15 students and incorporates care and therapy into its work.
Deputy Mayor of Westbury, councillor Gordon King said of his visit, “My wife Carole and I visited the Tumblewood Summer Celebration Day on July 27th. Located on the edge of Heywood village, Tumblewood is a special school for girls who are victims of emotional trauma.
“This was a special day to mark the end of the school year and enjoy the talents and achievements of all of the girls and staff. The girls embraced the sense of celebration by dressing impressively, with one highly talented girl acting as hairdresser.
“After a tasty and diverse lunch, prepared by chef Bart, guests were treated to a highly entertaining review of the year which was organised and arranged by the students and punctuated by musical and video interludes of their favourite songs.
“A recurring theme expressed in the music was a real sense of overcoming and achieving against the odds, and about standing up after being knocked down. In all of their performances everyone without exception displayed immense talent and real courage.
“Specialist school staff including teachers, care and therapy professionals gave detailed presentations concerning the learning, work experience, partnerships and the sensory rich experiences that they try to provide for all of the girls. The celebration concluded with the presentation of this year’s education and achievement awards.
“Afterwards, we toured the gardens to view some of the projects the girls had undertaken.
“Tumblewood is a unique and special school for girls with special needs. We enjoyed our visit immensely and wish the school continued success in the future.”
