A big warm welcome was given to Sue Nowell Kelley who came to speak to WI members about Makaton, a language programme devised to provide a means of communication to individuals who cannot communicate efficiently by speaking.
The Makaton language has been used effectively with individuals who have cognitive impairments, autism, Downs Syndrome, specific language impairment, multi-sensory impairment and acquired neurological disorders including stroke patients. Over 100,000 children and adults use Makaton symbols and signs.
Sue took members through the everyday basic signs that are helpful to everyday living and showed various symbols displayed on cards. There was also great fun in singing songs which helped the learning process. This interesting exercise was greatly enjoyed and Sue was given tumultuous applause.
The next part of the evening was devoted to the election of President and officers for the coming year. This was overseen by WI Advisor Jenny Coates.
Outgoing President Alison Irving gave her report for the past year and gave thanks to her committee. Retiring Treasurer Sara Honor gave thanks for the three years of support she had received. Alison Irving was re-elected as the new President and will announce her new committee at next month’s meeting. Next month’s meeting is speaker Phil Walker ‘Squirrels, Woodpeckers and Oyster Catchers.’ Come along and join us.
