Edington Arts is launching its 2017 programme with the first concert by a string sextet, The Chamber Players of St John, on Saturday 25th March at 7.30pm in Edington Priory Church .
After the sextet’s performance later this month, the village arts has another four events already planned for the year.
The Chamber Players of St John is composed of principal players from the London and Oxfordshire-based Orchestra of St John. Two violins, two violas and two cellos make a sumptuous sound, and the programme shows off the repertoire and the musicianship of the players to perfection. Lovely, melodic chamber works by Richard Strauss, Borodin and Brahms will make for a rewarding concert.
The Chamber Players have performed at various festivals in the UK, and have toured Holland, Belgium, Luxembourg and Spain. Individually the players have performed with the Academy of St Martins in the Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra, the Royal Ballet Orchestra, the London Philharmonic, and various quartets, including appearing in Dustin Hoffman’s film ‘Quartet’.
On Saturday 6th May, The Welsh Sinfonia Wind Quintet will play in the church, with the principals of the Sinfonia orchestra’s horn, bassoon, oboe, flute and clarinet sections performing together.
On Saturday 10th June, Andrew Carwood, director of music at St Paul’s Cathedral and director of The Cardinall’s Musick, will give a one-day choral workshop from 9.30am to 6pm. The workshop must be applied for in advance using contact details supplied below.
On Saturday 7th October, international virtuoso trumpeter Crispian Steel-Perkins will perform accompanied by top-notch organist Ian leGrice in a mixed programme of classical and contemporary music.
Friday 1st December will see the church host the Arts’ annual festive Advent Concert with the world-famous choir of New College, Oxford, directed by Paul Brough.
Concert tickets cost £20 front nave, £15 rear nave, £10 in the sides, and those aged 18 and under go free. There are discounts for Edington Angels, and paying on the door costs an extra £2.
