Exciting year ahead for the Heritage Society

WESTBURY Heritage Society is planning a busy year of events, talks and a move of premises. 

Their first event is a quiz at The Angel in Church Street on Tuesday 28th January, 7.30pm. Tickets £2 each and teams of up to six people. 

Organisers say, “Thinking caps on? Join us for a fun evening at the Angel for a fundraising quiz on a whole range of subjects. Prizes and a raffle promise to make it a great evening for everyone so please join us. The venue is interesting too. Under new management, the Angel is believed to be the oldest inn in Westbury dating back to the sixteenth century. It was once thatched and owned by John Matravers.” 

The society also have their latest display at the Heritage and Visitors Centre in the High Street this month on a century of social housing. 

They say, “Westbury had some of the earliest social housing in the country when the homes along Haynes Road were developed in 1920. This exhibition, developed with the town council and Sovereign Housing is a fascinating glimpse into the past with old maps, photographs, news cuttings and even a 1920s rent book. Please do come along to view the displays and share your own memories.” 

Later in the year, on Friday 3rd April, the society will host a talk from TV   archaeologist Julian Richards in April about his career in the field. 

On 26th May, there will be a talk by Liz Argent about ‘A History of Westbury in Ten Objects’ at the Methodist Church. 

In July this year, the society will also move their premises from the High Street shop to the first floor of the library.
