A PROJECT to re-instate a war memorial in the Market Place has stalled, with no sources of funding yet obtained.
Earlier this year, the town council agreed that the project would only go ahead if sources of external funding could be found.
Last year, calls were made to replace the monument in the Market Place, which was removed in 1975 to make way for car parking.
A consultation saw 349 votes in favour of re-instating a memorial, and 201 against.
The current war memorial in Edward Street – the venue for the town’s well-attended annual Remembrance service – would not be affected by any new monument.
The town council has approached both the Commonwealth War Graves Commission and the War Memorial Trust, but the project does not meet the organisations’ criteria.
Councillors will now debate how and if they want to proceed with the project at their next meeting in September.
