Representatives from local charities and voluntary organisations gathered at The Laverton on 28th January for Westbury Town Council’s annual Grants Awards Evening.
The town council awards small grants each year, totalling approx £16,500, to a wide range of organisations. These groups range from those who support the elderly and vulnerable to sporting and youth groups, and are all based either in Westbury itself or the surrounding area.
A representative from each organisation collected their cheque and gave a brief outline as to how the money would be spent; some spending their grant on replacing or buying new equipment, whilst others would use the grant to cover running costs or contribute towards essential maintenance.
The Mayor of Westbury, councillor Christine Mitchell welcomed about 90 people, representing 43 different organisations, to The Laverton and thanked them for the valuable contribution to the town.
“Westbury is very fortunate that, despite the size of our town, we have a strong sense of community spirit, and a very active group of volunteers all working to help the people of Westbury,” she said. “Those attending our grants awards evening for the first time are often surprised by just how much goes on in our town.”
