ALMOST two years after embarking on her campaign, the installation of a new pelican crossing on Warminster Road is “wonderful news” for a Westbury mother.
The new crossing is due to come into operation this week and will finally allow pedestrians to cross the busy A350 safely.
Sarah Wiseman started the campaign when she was walking her son to school in Westbury Leigh. Residents showed their support by signing a petition, which grew to 400 signatures.
Sarah said, “It’s just wonderful: seeing the crossing there is reward enough. It’s taken a year and 9 months, since I started the campaign. It’s a positive story, it’s going to be there and keep people, both old and young, safe.
“It’s all about safety, because it’s a very busy road.”
Many of Matravers School’s pupils have to cross the busy road to get to school, as do users of the Leighton Sports Centre, residents in the area, and other members of the public. The heavy traffic on the busy road posed a real danger to many of its users.
“People take their lives in their hands every time they cross” said Sarah. “Old people just cannot get across in time, and I’ve seen ladies running with their prams to get across.”
Sarah offered her thanks to councillor Mike Cuthbert-Murray for his support in making the crossing a reality. She added that she hopes people can stop using their cars for small distance journeys, now there is a safer route for pedestrians.
