PLANS for a weekly market in Westbury’s Market Place could come to fruition as early as next month.
Northacre Trading Ltd, the company behind the new weekend market and carboot sale on the Northacre Trading Estate, say they are just days away from sealing the deal on a plan to bring over 20 traders to Westbury’s Market Place on a weekly basis.
Northacre Trading’s Laurence Williams said, “I think it’s going to be amazing. We’ve had so many people giving us positive feedback, including the council, saying that Westbury needs a market.”
The scheme will see the Market Place closed to traffic between 7.00am and 4.00pm, with the market open from 8.00am – 3.00pm.
Already on board are purveyors of fresh meat, cheese, fish, fruit and vegetables, clothes, jewellery and more. There are also plans for additional special seasonal market days.
Laurence said, “I think it’s really important because it’s going to bring a lot of people into Westbury. Because they’ll be parking in the main car park and walking down past the shops, it should also bring extra trade to the High Street and Maristow Street.”
Cllr Russell Hawker, chair of the Westbury Area Board and a town councillor, said that a weekly regular market had was something the council had been looking into since he raised the issue at a meeting earlier in the year, and was pleased that a local operator had come forward. He said, “Clearly a weekly regular market can only be good news for the town centre as it can only create additional interest and draw more customers in to the town centre.”
