A WESTBURY woman is setting out to walk 90km to celebrate the 90th anniversary of the Royal British Legion.
Sue Wakelin is walking the distance with Tracey Smith, a fellow member of the Royal British Legion Riders Branch (Wiltshire). The duo were hoping to raise £100 each but have already smashed this target with over £1,500 raised, and more coming, in the run up to their challenge on the 23rd-25th July.
Sue said, “My friend Tracey organised it all, and I said ‘I’ll do it with you’ for a laugh – and then I thought, I’ll actually do it! Once the sponsorship money comes in thick and fast you realise what a good thing it is to do. We said £100 each, then we got to £500 and thought if we can get to £1,000 that will be amazing, then we thought we’d go for £1,500. The response has been absolutely amazing.”
The walk will start in Melksham, and will total 90km around the county before ending in Warminster where Tracey’s husband works at the Ministry of Defence.
The Royal British Legion provides welfare to the whole armed forces family, serving current and ex-service personnel and their dependants.
The national charity also campaigns on a range of issues affecting service people. The charity is the custodian of remembrance and run the Poppy Appeal each year.
This year the charity celebrates its 90th anniversary with a countrywide charity appeal. You can follow the charity drive by visiting the British Legion website at www.britishlegion.org.uk.
