FLAUTIST, Katie Antonio has won the title of Matravers School Young Musician of the Year. The final was held last month to a large audience and was sponsored by the Lions Club of Westbury.
The other winners in the final were; Best Ensemble – Flute Choir; Best Senior Performer – Tom Brawn; Best Intermediate Performer – Lauren Medway; Best Junior Performer – Katie Rylands; Most Improved Musician (for curriculum work) – Cameron Hulbert; Most Potential in a Young Musician – Ryan Heritage (results in a grant for one year of music lessons).
The competition drew an increasing number of students who auditioned for the chance to take part. The auditions took place after school in the music department and were narrowed down to the finalists who all performed in the grand final.
The finalists were as follows; Junior Finalists: Beth Brawn – violin, Jess Scott – trumpet, Katie Rylands – voice, and Jess Jones.
Intermediate Finalists: Harry Page – voice, Lauren Medway – voice, Aiden Hungerford – piano, Rhiannon Daly – violin.
Senior Finalists: Hebe Mitchell – voice, Jess Knapp – piano and voice, Tom Brawn – saxophone, Katie Antonio – flute, Georgia Fuke – voice.
Ensemble Finalists: Tom Newnham and Lewis Regler, Flute Choir, Lauren Medway and Yasmin Waugh, Ben Precup, Ali Blance and George Harford.
Elizabeth Oliver, head of music at Matravers School said, “As always it was a fantastic opportunity to watch some young musicians perform for the first time and watch the music department regulars display their progress since last year.
“In addition, it is always a good chance to discover some new and exciting talent within our school community.
“It was a fantastic evening and a well fought final with many worthy winners. The judging panel had a tough job! It takes real nerve and confidence to perform solo in front of such a large audience and hours of practise time went into all the performances. As a department we are hugely proud of all your achievements and inspiring musicianship. Long may this fantastic competition run!”
