WESTBURY Town Council continues to invite all groups who are involved in leisure activities in the town to come forward to help them ascertain what leisure facilities the town needs in the future.
Westbury is awaiting the start of the discussions for a possible campus in Westbury, which could see all or some of the facilities run by Wiltshire Council together in one hub. Facilities included in the discussion will include the town’s Victorian swimming pool and Leighton Recreation Centre.
However, a question mark has hung over the town’s leisure facilties much longer. Fears that the town’s swimming pool could be closed were followed by a review by Wiltshire Council in 2010 into leisure facilities across the county. This review concluded that the pool and recreation centre would “remain the responsibility of the [Wiltshire] council until future management arrangements are determined.”
Westbury Town Council has set up a leisure working group in order to have a clear idea of what the town’s groups and organisations want and need ahead of campus discussions, which are anticipated to start in 2012.
Cllr Dorian Jones explained, “The principle aim of this group is to identify the type of leisure activity in the town and the numbers that use the facilities. Leisure plays a vitally important role in many people’s lives both in health and entertainment, and our desire is to protect and promote those activities accordingly.
“Westbury is indeed fortunate to have a vibrant sports centre at Leighton Green, as well as an historic swimming pool and golf club to name but a few and we at Westbury Town Council are committed to seeing these facilities within our town prosper.”
The working group has already written to many leisure organisations in the town, but would like to hear from any other groups who would like to have an input by the end of the year. For more details contact: westburytc@btconnect.com
