Edington Priory Church will host the 12th Annual Jazz Barbecue on Friday 25th July
Commencing at 7.00pm in the car park with food, drink and musical entertainment, the main event will be in the church from 7.30pm. Tickets, priced £10, are available from Maggie Atterbury on 01380 830452 or Robin Wilson on 01380 830566.
One of the organisers, Maggie Atterbury said, “It is hoped that, by now, this is a firm date in your diary! To interest you further I can now add some biographical notes.
“Michael Lukes, saxophone, who will lead the group, is a local resident and has sat in with some of the bands in the past. He entertained you in the car park last year and received very favourable remarks.
“He started out as a classical cellist but, having fallen in love with jazz at an early age, learned double bass and then saxophone. While at Oxford he wrote his undergraduate thesis on Duke Ellington`s orchestra. He studied saxophone as a postgraduate at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. He has performed with many notable musicians and is a lawyer.
“Howard Peacock, guitar, began learning the instrument as a university student and is continuing to do so! His style is a distillation from influences such as Wes Montgomery and Mike Stern. He writes philosophy papers for journals with very small circulations and makes beer in his shed. He teaches Latin at a South London girls’ school.
“Tom Gray, piano, fell under the spell of jazz as a teenager. While studying at Oxford he became involved in the thriving jazz scene with stints in the University Jazz Society Orchestra and a weekly local pub residency. He is the father of two pre-school children whom he is encouraging to carry on his love of the genre.
“John Rixon, bass, was originally a drummer. He works for a software company making online gaming products.
“John Callaghan, drums, started as a pianist but then became a drummer. He also plays tuned percussion from time to time. Steve Gadd has been an influence and he follows Warren Wolfe, vibraphone. He works in the renewable energy industry and is currently leading work to support development of new offshore technologies.
“It looks as though we could be having some interesting interval conversations! Do come along and support this worthy cause. All proceeds will be for the Priory Church.”
