BRATTON Silver Band was delighted to win 3rd prize at the South West Brass Band Association ‘Own choice’ contest at the Winter Gardens in Weston-Super-Mare on Sunday 19th May.
The band were promoted from the fourth to the third section late last year, so were competing against bands of a much higher standard than in previous years. The band, led by Simon Carr, played Stephen Bulla’s ‘Chorale and Toccata’. The adjudicator, Chris Wormald, wrote about the band’s rendition that the ‘style was generally excellent, the dynamics and balance superbly observed… overall, a very positive performance’.
The contest was a landmark event for the band as it marked the last performance for their principal cornet player and long-term secretary, Lisa Hill. Over the years, Lisa has been a stalwart organiser and an exceptional player, and her contributions will be greatly missed.
Bratton Silver Band is, therefore, looking for a new principal cornet player, and also a principal euphonium player. Indeed, players of all abilities are welcome to come along and have a blow. Practices take place at the Bratton Church Institute every Monday and Friday at 8.00 – 10.00pm. Instruments can be loaned if necessary.
Anyone interested in hearing the band is welcome to attend some upcoming performances. On 7th June the band will be joining Con Brio choir at Westbury Methodist Church in raising money for Dorothy House.
