MORE than 15 Soapbox challengers have signed up to the White Horse Soapbox Derby which is being held on Saturday, May 21st.
Teams from Wiltshire College, University Motorsport Engineering, Ab Dynamics and Westbury Football Club have all signed up to take part, while teams from as far away as Preston and Sleaford are also going to race carts down the White Horse Hill in the highly anticipated event, organised by Westbury Town Council.
But there are still places available if you want to enter a team.
Ryan Child, events manager at Westbury Town Council says, “The White Horse Soapbox and Engineering Fair isn’t just another Soapbox event; it will also have a focus on a ‘practical introduction to STEM [science, technology, engineering and maths] for young people’. There will be an engineering fair with stalls introducing young people to careers and opportunities in the industry, as well as live music, food and drinks.”
One of the primary sponsors, Arke Ltd is starting a workshop next week to engage with students at Matravers school. Other event sponsors include Daykin Estates and AB Dynamics.
The Soapbox course will run for 850m with a maximum steepness of 18.5 percent, making it one of the most challenging Soapbox races anywhere in the UK. The fair will be held at the bottom of the hill within the White Horse Equestrian Centre and Long River Farm Camping.
