MATRAVERS School has celebrated both GCSE and A-level results with headteacher, Dr Simon Riding, saying he is proud of the students’ achievements.
Sixth form students nervously awaited their results on Thursday 15th August to find out whether they had been successful in getting the grades they need to go on to their chosen university. While on Thursday 22nd August it was the turn of Matravers’ GCSE students to receive their results, with many of them choosing to stay at Matravers to study A-levels at sixth form.
Commenting on the A-level results, the school said, “Among the top performing A-level students this year was head boy, Ben Gunstone, who is going on to read French and German at Cardiff University. Maddie Hewitt, Jess Morris and Emily Wain are all going on to study history at Manchester Metropolitan University, Kent and Brunel respectively. Lauren Ashman excelled in her exams and has recently started an apprenticeship with Martin & Co estate agents.
“Matravers Sixth Form specialises in a highly successful ‘mixed pathway’ of A-levels and BTECs, which continues to be an area of real strength, allowing students to move on to prestigious and competitive destinations.
“Among the successful students this year are Amina Khanom who is moving on to train to be a primary school teacher at the University of the West of England; Joe Crossley who won a place to study marketing at Bournemouth University, and James Sheldon who is going to be studying football studies at Solent University, which combines coaching and the study of the business of top level football. Joe Sanders is going to study dance performance at Chichester.”
Head of dance, Gemma Richards said, “We are immensely proud of Joe and the work he has put into his A-level dance course. He is a great example of what can be achieved when a student dedicates themselves to something they truly love.”
Joe is the latest in a long line of successful dance students from Matravers who have gone on to study the subject at a higher level.
Deputy headteacher, Paul Clark said, “As a school we are very happy to see so many of our students moving on to great destinations. Our mixed pathway really opens door for many of our young people, allowing them to pursue their dreams and to build a successful future.”
The school continued, “Matravers School Sixth Form has a broad range of subjects available to new entrants this September. Students can opt to study from a wide range of traditional A-level subjects, alongside more vocational qualifications in subjects such as business studies, IT, health and social care, performing arts, sport and outdoor education.
“There are a few places still available and any student who is interested in joining this growing success story should contact Ian Browning (director, Post-16) as soon as possible.”
Commenting on the GCSEs, headteacher, Dr Simon Riding said, “Matravers School is once again delighted with another superb set of GCSE results.
“A significant group of students (12%) have gained the highest grades across the board, gaining at least 5 grades at 7+. An example of this true academic excellence is where Matthew Leonard achieved 7 grade 9s within an exemplary set of results, the top benchmark for outstanding achievement. Oscar Morris and Jess Leach achieved 8 grade 7-9s, and Erin Coulson, 7 Grade 7-9s: these grades are an outstanding achievement.
“We are also delighted at the quality throughout these GCSE results. A high proportion of students have achieved significant progress from their KS2 primary scores: some notable mentions go to Maisie Long, Emily Fear and Kayleigh Tugwell as the highest performing girls, and Will Woodman, Sam Archer and Henry Brooker as the highest performing boys.
“We would also like to congratulate the following students: Dean Barratt, Robin Weston, Elisha Romans, Josh Johnson, Bradleigh Meadows, Kacper Traczyk, and Olivia Webley – all of whom made massive improvements throughout key stage 4 to achieve both excellent attainment and progress scores.
“We are looking forward to welcoming back the vast majority of the class 2019 to our thriving sixth form, and to our students moving on to apprenticeships and colleges, we wish them good luck for the future.
“We are so proud of what is happening at Matravers School. With the opening of our state-of-the-art STEM block imminent, we look forward to welcoming back our students to another exciting and action packed year!”
