MATRAVERS School in Westbury is appealing to local people to become school governors.
There are currently a vacancies for two co-opted, two partnership and one parent governor positions on the school governing board.
Co-opted governors can be anyone with the relevant skills, including parents of children at the school, and local authority or school employees, as well as other members of the community.
Partnership governors are nominated by parents or other members of the community, but cannot be parents of children at the school, or members of staff. (Parent governors are elected by other parents/carers – please see the school website for further information).
Clerk to the governors Jessica Yeatman says, “Becoming a school governor involves taking on one of the most important and valuable roles in education – the strategic leadership of a school.
“Governors are one of the biggest groups of volunteers in the country. The purpose of the governing body is to help the school to provide the best possible education for its pupils. They set the school aims and policies together with the headteacher, although the head is responsible for day-to-day management.”
Guy Davies, chair of the board of governors at Matravers said, “I’d like to invite people from the local community who may be able to bring valuable skills to the school, to consider putting themselves forward for the non-parent vacancies.
“I’d also like to ask parents and carers of registered pupils to consider applying for a parent governor role, or nominating a candidate for a partnership vacancy.
“Successful candidates will share the vision and values of the board and be able to take a strategic view of the place of secondary education in the Westbury area. We would especially welcome applications from people with knowledge of safeguarding in schools and interest in the provision made for students with special educational needs.
“Experience of leadership and management in the public or private sectors would also be of benefit. Knowledge of school governance would be an advantage, but induction and training will be given.”
