MATRAVERS School celebrated ‘exceptional’ GCSE and BTEC achievements and many ‘outstanding’ A-Level results last week, despite extremely challenging circumstances caused by the pandemic.
This year, following the cancellation of exams nationally, grades were awarded through a rigorous process of teacher-assessed grades. All grades were approved and awarded by exam boards, against national standards.
The school paid tribute to its pupils with headteacher, Dr Simon Riding saying, “We are immensely proud of all the work and achievements of our pupils, especially after such another challenging and disrupted year.”
Amongst its top A-Level performers were Matthew Leonard, who gained A*A*A*A and is headed to the University of Oxford to read earth science; Libby Salter, who gained A*A*A* and an A in her extended project qualification, and Maisie Long, who achieved A*A*A, both including A* in dance and drama. Erin Coulson secured A*AA and will shortly be starting an apprenticeship with Leonardo’s Helicopters in Yeovil while head girl, Katie Bradbeer, achieved A*AA in her A levels and an A* in her extended project qualification and is going to Bristol University to read English and history.
Jessie Leach gained A*A*A and is headed to Warwick to read history and politics; James Grout secured A*A*A and is also going to Warwick to read history and Becca Kearney achieved ABB and an A in her EPQ and is going to the University of Winchester to train to be a primary school teacher.
Other notable successes were Oscar Keen who secured a Distinction* and a Distinction in his BTECs and a B at A-Level allowing him to move onto Loughborough University to study international business; Tilly Scarrott who achieved a BTEC Distinction and BB at A-Level and is going to Royal Holloway to read psychology and Cameron Dawes who gained two Distinctions alongside his A-Level in English language.”
Director of Post-16, Ian Browning said, “We are immensely proud of how well our students have coped with the challenges of the past 18 months. Their hard work and resilience has really paid off, with many students moving on to top-ranking universities and apprenticeships and we look forward to seeing what this amazing group of young people will achieve in the future.”
Headteacher, Dr Simon Riding said, “We are very proud of all those in the Matravers family and are especially delighted for our Year 13 students who richly deserve the very impressive results that they have achieved, particularly as they have responded with great resilience to the challenges presented to them by the Covid-19 pandemic. As our Year 13 students graduate from Matravers and become alumni and part of the extended Matravers family, we look forward to hearing about their many successes and future adventures.”
For the GCSE results, announced on Thursday 12th August, the school reported an overwhelming group of pupils had achieved superb results.
Amongst those doing particularly well were Kaelan Rankin Moore (eight grade 9s and 1 Distinction*); Ereena Ullah (six grade 9s and three grade 8s), Mollie West (four grade 9s, four grade 8s and one grade 7) and Faith Leitch (four grade 9s, four grade 8s and one Distinction*).
Headteacher, Dr Simon Riding said, “The Matravers family has worked tirelessly to ensure our pupils are all able to move on to the next stage of their educational career. On the back of our exceptional sixth form results this week, we are delighted that so many of our Year 11s, along with pupils from other schools, will choose to be part of the Matravers family by joining our thriving sixth form in September.
“To the small number of pupils who are moving on to apprenticeships and Post-16 colleges, we wish them luck and look forward to seeing what they will achieve in the future as part of the extended Matravers family alumni.”
Matravers School Sixth Form has a broad range of subjects available to new entrants this September. Students can opt to study from a wide range of traditional A-Level subjects, alongside move vocational qualifications in subjects such as business, IT, health and social care and sport.
There are a few places still available and any student who is interested in joining the successful sixth form should contact Ian Browning (director, Post-16) as soon as possible.
The school said, “Matravers sixth form specialises in a highly successful ‘mixed pathway’ of A-Levels and BTECs, which continues to be an area of real strength, allowing students to move on to prestigious and competitive destinations.
The government is not publishing performance data for any schools or colleges this year due to the varying impact of the pandemic.
