WESTBURY began to mark the commemoration of the World War One centenary on Friday 28th March with the first of a series of three specialist talks by battlefield guide Tony Coutts-Britton.
Over 60 people attended ‘The shot that shook the world’ at All Saints Church. The talk focussed on the assassination in Sarajevo of the Grand Duke Ferdinand, heir to the throne of the Austro-Hungarian Empire – the act that led eventually to the start of the Great War.
Two other talks will take place later in the year – including one that focusses on the famous Christmas Truce of 1914.
