Matravers school is delighted that their sixth form biologists, chemists and physicists have again successfully achieved a Gold CREST award.
This is a prestigious award that is undertaken in association with the British Science Association (BSA). Following the completion of their AS examinations in the summer, students worked independently on an area of interest for them related to the Year 13 course. These were presented to John Trickett (the assessor at the BSA), mentors from Bristol University, parents, their teachers and members of the schools Senior Management Team on the evening of Monday 20th July.
The project itself really does lend itself to independent study; one of the reasons why it is recognised by UCAS.
To help them with their research students either found, or were allocated a mentor. This year the mentors were made up from people from industry, PHD students and teaching fellows.
John Trickett, BSA assessor at the BSA said, “The quality of work this year surpassed that of the previous year, and I am looking forward to seeing the standard of work from the Matravers School in the summer of 2016.”
The school found that the students were totally engaged with their projects, and some quotes included:
“The project allowed me to focus on an area that really interested me” (Reece Longden);
“It gave me a chance to look into something I am interested in studying at University” (Kiera Harding);
“We gained skills in both independent research and how to present our findings.” (Jess Scragg- Head Girl).
