PLANS to build 200 homes at land off Storridge Road have been met with the same response from town councillors, for the same reasons as in previous planning applications.
The developer, Gladman Developments, has been trying to build on the site since 2017 having had plans previously refused by Wiltshire Council in 2018. They are currently preparing a new planning application for 200 homes off Storridge Road, behind Hawkeridge Park and, as part of this, they want to engage with the town council and nearby residents.
Westbury town councillors voted against the plans at last week’s meeting of the town council’s highways, planning and development committee, citing the same reasons for refusal as last time.
These reasons include that the town council thinks the development is too far out of town to access schools, shops and medical services without the use of a car, further development would impact on air quality standards through the increased pressure of traffic, the development is outside the settlement boundary and is in breach of core policy 1 and 2, and the alternations to the pavements, highways and roundabouts would be unsafe for road and pavement users.
A letter to the town council from a spokesperson for the developer said, “Our revised proposal currently proposes a residential development of approximately 200 houses including 40% affordable housing, a large area of public open space, and the provision of allotments and recreational facilities.
“As part of our commitment to public engagement, we will shortly be commencing a public consultation exercise with the local community to seek their views on our proposals. We recognise that new development can affect communities in a number of different ways, and we would welcome any comments or suggestions you may have on our proposals. This would help us explore how our proposed scheme could be planned to respond positively to the needs of the community you represent. “
