HELPING hands are needed to keep Westbury’s visitor centre open.
The centre, which provides tourist information, is also home to a host of Westbury history, exhibitions and local artefacts. Run by the town’s heritage society, the High Street venue is a drop in for everything from bus timetables to vintage maps and old photographs of town buildings.
Now, more people are needed to lend a hand in manning the front desk for just a couple of hours each week.
“We have a great band of volunteers, but we just need a little more help to make sure we can continue providing the service we think visitors need,” explained chair of the Heritage Society, Sally Hendry.
“It can be really interesting and satisfying work. You get to meet all sorts of people who pop into the centre for a wide range of reasons. Some might want to pick up free doggy bags, others may need directions or information about the town, and some call in with artefacts of local history which they want to donate to the centre.”
Volunteers are really valued – one of the society’s stalwarts, Bill Prior, has just been awarded the George Nichols Cup in recognition of his hard work and dedication.
If anyone would like more information about volunteering, please call the centre on 01373 825784.
The centre is open every day except Sundays and Mondays as it is due for a facelift. Committee members and helpers are taking up their paintbrushes to refurbish the centre and refresh the exhibits.
