The hosts for this meeting were Dilton Marsh WI and held in the Memorial Hall. The evening opened with the singing of Jerusalem and following this, a tribute to Frances Sissons who was retiring after 25 years as Treasurer to the group.
The speaker for the evening was Mike Brook with his ‘Musings from the Amateur Stage.’ He announced to his attentive audience that it was his thirty-third time in giving this talk as he had been treading the boards of amateur stage for 31 years.
He spoke of his varied roles in a broad spectrum of plays and the amusing times he experienced with his fellow actors. The talk was interceded with dramatic monologues from the various productions including, ‘Ten Times Table’ by Alan Bennett with a worthy north country accent. ‘Sitting on the Bench’ a Peter Cook thought-provoking presentation as a man who had been a miner but wondered if he might have been a judge and Rowan Atkinson’s ‘A Politicians Speech.’
There was also included some audience participation centred on other plays in which he had performed many varied roles. Great applause and thanks were given to this talented gentleman.
More entertainment followed with five members of Edington WI singing a selection of English folk songs. Their voices were remarkable and worthy of a professional stage.
