August is considered by many to be a holiday month and consequently many groups, clubs and societies do not hold a meeting.
Whilst accepting this as a commonsense approach as inevitably fewer members than usual are available, Westbury and District U3A have arranged a lunch outing each year on would have been the August general meeting date.
This year was no exception, the venue for the first time being within Westbury, the Chalfont House Hotel. Those attending had pre-selected from the flexible three course menu, selecting one, two or three courses according to their appetite and taste.
They enjoyed both the meal and the opportunity to talk to other members, indeed the room was only quiet once food had been served. Topics of discussion were wide ranging and naturally included the forthcoming U3A general meetings and individual group meetings. It was interesting to hear in detail the activities of the bird watching and art groups, the latter having space for new recruits.
Maggie Skyrme of the U3A said, “A full programme of talks for the monthly meeting has been arranged. In September, on the 9th, we will hear about The Making of ‘Casablanca’ whilst October and November bring Sevington – ‘A Victorian School in 21C and a Policeman’s Lot’.
“Do join us, we meet on the second Tuesday each month, 1.45 for 2.00pm, at the United Reformed Church Hall, Warminster Road. Further details are available by ringing the U3A phone number 07939 395940.”
