23 A-level students from Matravers have just successfully completed and achieved a Gold CREST award.
This is a highly prestigious and UCAS recognised award that is undertaken in association with the BSA (British Science Association). The now year 13 students spent the last term of their year 12 course focussing on an area of specific interest to them that linked to the A2 course. The finale to this came on Monday 21st July when students had to present their project work in the form on a scientific display to their teachers and parents.
“The presentation evening was highly enjoyable event and feedback from students, colleagues and parents was very positive,” said Mr Feltham, the teacher overseeing the activity.
The project itself really does lend itself to independent study; one of the reasons why it is recognised by UCAS. To help them with their research students either found, or were allocated, a contact with a member of their industry or someone who works in their relevant field in higher education. This year there were PHD students, teaching fellows and aquarium staff to name a few.
John Trickett, the assessor at the BSA said that, “This was a very creative and innovative way that students undertook the project and the standard of work was very impressive.” He added that he was looking forward to seeing the standard of work from the Matravers School for next year.
The students also found the project to be a positive and engaging educational experience. Some quotes from students included “The project really has helped us prepare for the A2 course and for university” (Samuel Sturgess), and that “We have managed to develop a greater understanding of the material” (Chloe Bleakley).
