WESTBURY’S Diamond Jubilee celebrations will be fit for a Queen with people of all ages getting involved in a host of celebrations across the town and villages.
The Queen marks 60 years as Monarch in 2012, and from Saturday 2nd June to Tuesday 5th June celebrations will take place throughout the UK and across the Commonwealth. Across Westbury and the villages, a multitude of events and activities are being held over the four-day weekend in a programme packed with fun and entertainment. Just some of the events for the community include the town’s popular biennial street fayre, the lighting of the White Horse beacon, fetes, a village Carnival, concerts, and 1950s parties. The town council has organised a programme with events to bring family, friends, and neighbours together, while villages have local celebrations planned and organisations are putting on special activities. Decorations will be up in the town centre, while shops will be dressing their windows. In this issue of the White Horse News, find out what’s on in our special Jubilee feature, starting on page 11. The town council has also produced a colour commemorative programme, which not only includes a list of events but also features articles and pictures about the Queen, events over the six decades of her reign, and how Westbury has celebrated Jubilee events in the past. Each booklet also gives a unique number for a prize draw, where you can win a dinner for four people. Later in the month, a commemorative Jubilee tree will be planted in Soisy Gardens. The town council’s Diamond Jubilee committee say, “We are hoping the Diamond Jubilee celebrations organised for Westbury will have lasting memories and enjoyed by all. This is a time for family, friends and neighbours to get together and enjoy the various events taking place over the weekend 2nd – 4th June. “There are events for all ages including the children’s party and fancy dress competition, tea dance and our Street Fayre which is always a very popular event and again this year will have a variety of attractions. On the Monday evening we conclude with an open air music concert in the Market Place featuring several performers and ending with a Queen tribute band.” Sue Ezra, Westbury Mayor and chair of the town council’s Diamond Jubilee committee said, “The celebrations have something for everyone. We’ve tried to cover all the age groups, from the small children to the over 60s. I’m most looking forward to the concert on Monday night with Queen, but I am looking forward to all of it!” See our next issue for a picture special of Westbury’s celebrations!
