THE Westbury Walkers was formed in 1980 by Eileen Dew and the late Deirdre of Westbury.
It was so named because at that time, most of the walks and walkers originated from the town, but walks now take place over a wider area.
The club has currently 22 members from the Westbury, Warminster, Frome and Trowbridge areas and beyond. The age range is 50 to 80 years and the club is always pleased to welcome new members.
Each year the club arranges a programme which consists of a walk normally on every second Sunday in the month. Walks are generally from 7 – 9 miles and the start is usually within 1 hour’s drive from Westbury. In addition, there is an extra walk on New Year’s Day and the club also organises one walking weekend in May in places such as Buckinghamshire, Dorset, Exmoor, Shropshire, Somerset, Wales and Yorkshire.
Because of the pandemic, last year the club was able to do just 7 walks, some in groups of 6 to comply with the Covid-19 restrictions applicable at the time and so far no walks have been undertaken in 2021. It is hoped that at least some of the planned walks will take place later in the year.
Planned walking locations for 2021 include The Mendips, Avebury, Chitterne, Corsham, East Knoyle, Vale of Pewsey, Badbury rings. The walking weekend will be in the beautiful Elan Valley, Mid Wales if conditions allow.
In late January/early February, the Westbury Walkers normally hold a supper and annual general meeting, but in 2021 this will take place at a later date due to Covid-19 restrictions. The club is run by an annually elected committee comprising a chairman, secretary and treasurer plus up to 8 members. However, all club members are encouraged to be fully involved by suggesting and, if possible, leading walks.
