WESTBURY Walkers was founded in 1980 by Eileen Dew, together with the late Deidre Payne.
Initially there were just a few members who undertook afternoon walks in the local area, but rapidly the membership grew to over 30 and the length of walks increased to 8-10 miles, including walking weekends in places such as North Wales, the Peak district, Yorkshire and Exmoor.
When Deidre left the group in 1999, a committee was formed and Eileen was elected as chairman – a role she has undertaken until this year when she decided for health reasons, that it was time to step down and her place has been taken by long-time member Teressa Mitchard.
Eileen will be greatly missed on the walks and members expressed their gratitude to her for the pleasure that the Westbury Walkers has given them over the years by a presentation on 10th November of various gifts. She was also awarded a life membership and it is hoped she will take part in any future social occasions put on by the walking group .
