TODAY sees the 600th issue of White Horse News and to celebrate we have produced a special 11 page commemorative feature covering all the big news stories from the last 24+ years.
The paper was started in 1991 and was bought the following year by Ian and Susan Drew who still run the paper today. It was then a monthly paper but was quickly turned into the fortnightly paper that it is today.
“The White Horse News would not be running today without the fantastic support of our loyal band of advertisers (whose revenue pays for the newspaper) and the support of organisations, groups and individuals in Westbury and the surrounding villages,” said Ian and Susan. “We are really grateful to you all for your tremendous support.
“We have always seen the newspaper as a community paper and we welcome contributions from all local clubs, organisations and individuals who feel they have something to say about the town and what is happening.
“To commemorate our 600th edition, we have produced a round-up of just some of the news that hit the front pages over the years which you can find in an 11 page feature in the paper this week.
“We hope you enjoy reading your local newspaper and that you will continue to support us for many years to come.”
Westbury mayor cllr David Bradshaw said, “I think it is great news that the White Horse News is on its 600th issue; this shows how successful and invaluable this local newspaper is to the community of Westbury. I wish it every success in the future. Long may you keep going – congratulations!”
White Horse News has sister free newspapers in Melksham (Melksham Independent News) and Frome (Frome Times), which are all published fortnightly. The three newspapers come under the umbrella of Wiltshire Publications Ltd, which is entirely independent of other newspaper groups. All the staff are local people.
“We are proud that we are one of the few independent family-owned newspapers left in the country,” added Ian and Susan.
