4YOUTH Westbury, the local youth outreach team, recently organised a litter pick at the skatepark in Penleigh Park and many young people got stuck in to help clean up the area.
4Youth say that they organised the litter pick alongside young people in the town as a direct response to posts on social media that suggested young people were leaving litter.
The post on Spotted Westbury showed litter scattered around the skate park, but also showed that the bins that are provided in the area were not used.
Gemma Holt the lead youth worker for 4Youth in Westbury said, “We saw the post about the litter scattered across the skate park and so decided to go down that evening to have a big clean-up of the whole area during our detached youth work session and asked the young people if they would help.
“We had a small group who helped us to clear five big bags of litter from in and around the park.”
4Youth are planning to do a litter pick of the skate park each week during their detached youth work sessions which are on a Tuesday at around 7pm. Gemma added, “We will try to encourage the young people who use the park to look after the area and keep it tidy as we have received such positive feedback from the local community from our first litter pick.”
