AN exhibition to celebrate those who served in the First World War from Westbury and the surrounding villages, is being held at All Saints Church from Sunday 11th to Saturday 17th November.
The Westbury branch of the Wiltshire Family History Group have used the past four years, when the nation started to look at ways to commemorate the WW1 centenary, to research the names of the men and women from Westbury and the surrounding villages who joined up and served in WW1.
Lynne Vercoe of the Family History Group said, “Much is made of those who lost their lives in the conflict, but little is know about who joined up and returned. We wanted to find out more about those men and women and pay tribute to them.
“For the last four years we have been researching who they were, where they lived and worked, their families and their lives after they returned. To date we have found approximately 650 names and so a Roll of Honour is being prepared.”
All information will be on display in an exhibition to be held in All Saints Church from Sunday 11th to Saturday 17th November from 10am-4pm. It will also include photographs and information the group found on Heywood House, while it was in use as a voluntary aid hospital.
Lynne continued, “Please come and pay tribute to those who served and also see the display of over 3,000 poppies knitted and crocheted by the community.”
