ARMY cadet, Joe Cannings, jumped 15,000ft out of a plane to raise money for Cancer Research UK to give back to the charity after his mum received the all clear from breast cancer last year.
On Sunday 7th July, Joe Cannings of Matravers Combined Cadet Force (CCF), took to the skies to complete his fundraising challenge.
In total, combining online and offline donations, Joe has raised almost £1,000.
Joe said, “Cancer has affected my family in a large way. My mum was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2016, but is now clear. Both my granddads, my aunt and cousin have sadly passed away due to cancer. My other aunt had melanoma, but is now clear. Seeing as Cancer Research has done so much for my family, I felt like it was my turn to give back.
“The skydive was insane, such a surreal experience. You feel weightless, yet you are falling at 125mph. I would definitely do it again.”

Joe has also been recognised across the town for his work in Matravers CCF. He joined in September 2015 and is currently a staff sergeant. He completed the Ten Tors challenge in 2016, completed the bronze and silver Duke of Edinburgh awards and won a Westbury Young People award last year, Westbury Young Leader, for his work with the contingent.
Joe continued, “The amount of experiences and opportunities Matravers CCF has given me is incredible, I can’t thank enough the Contingent Commander Capt. Edward Fairnington and staff, for the time they give to the contingent.
“Sadly this is my last year with Matravers CCF as in September I will be joining the Army. I will be sad to leave, but I look forward to visiting the contingent and seeing how much they have grown.
“Cadets has set me up so well for my future career, which I cannot thank the staff enough for and I will miss it greatly.”
