A path in Penleigh Park will be resurfaced following a campaign from local resident group POPCAN, plus funding from Westbury Area Board and local company Valletta Surfacing Ltd.
This popular pathway, known to residents as the “wobbly path”, helps to connect the residents in nearby streets to the local infant/junior school and the play areas.
The surface of the path is currently badly maintained with raised bricks that are trip hazards. A local resident launched a complaint at a POPCAN meeting, sharing the difficulties that families face when using pushchairs.
With the support of Scott Jacobs-Lange at Sovereign Housing, who maintain the housing estate surrounding the park, and Westbury Town Council, POPCAN has now received a £5,000 grant from Westbury Area Board to get the path resurfaced. Even though this was a major success for the residents, it fell short of the total money needed for the project.Cllr Sheila Kimmins then contacted local resurfacing company, Valletta Surfacing Ltd from Clivey near Dilton Marsh, who agreed to match-fund the grant and carry out the work required.
The work is due to start the week of the 9th September with completion, weather depending, around the 16th September.
Tina Devereux, a member of POPCAN, told White Horse News, “The path really is an eyesore and a dangerous trip hazard, so we are really excited that we managed to obtain the grant and for the help from Valletta Surfacing Ltd. This is another step forward in making Penleigh Park a safer place for everyone to use.
“It is a slow process, but now we have demolished the pavilion, painted the skate ramp, held pop-up fun days, hosted free dodgeball sessions and now plan for both the swing set and pathway to be redone, it is great news.
“A big thank you must go to Scott Jacobs-Lange of Sovereign Housing who has given us all the support we needed to get this path and other projects off the ground.”
