The local Hilly Helmet Challenge last week attracted over 100 runners and raised around £5,000 for the Brain Tumour Support charity.
The challenge, now in its eighth year, saw runners race just over four miles, setting out from Leighton Recreation Centre, sporting an array of fun and imaginative headgear.
Organised by Dilton Marsh local Robin-Mark Schols, the Hilly Helmet Challenge was inspired by his own recovery from brain surgery when he had to wear a safety helmet wherever he went for a year, even when he went for a run.
“It was great to see over 100 runners signed up to take on the eighth running of the Hilly Helmet Challenge as we were once again raising money for the charity Brain Tumour Support,” said Robin.
“With all event expenses covered by generous event partners enabling every penny of the entry fees to go to the charity, we expect the total raised to be close to £5,000 which includes a corporate donation and the proceeds of raffles held on the night.
“The best helmet prize went to Richard Moore from Corsham who sported a flying helmet featuring a World War I biplane with working propellers!
“First finisher was Gary Day from Hilperton in a time of 28:18. First Lady was Laura Midwinter-Brown of Shaw finishing in 34:26.
“I’d like to thank event partners Kyna Software, Stark Ecology, The West Wilts Magazine, Mike Sargeant and Sportsbug for their contributions to the event expenses and White Horse pottery for creating our prizes and mementos.
“I’d also like to thank all the volunteers who help me each year with publicity and marshalling on the night, Leighton Recreation Centre staff for their assistance and Westbury and District Cricket Club who provided refreshments and a barbecue for us all. “All in all, another successful event enjoyed by all with some great creative headgear on show.
