Westbury woman among winners of railway photography competition

A photography taken by a Westbury woman is now on display at the town’s train station after she was selected as one of the winners of a regional rail-themed photography competition.  

Sue Stanley’s photograph of a train at Westbury Station was one of 21 winners in the “Down the Line” photography competition organised by TransWilts.

The competition invited amateur photographers of all ages and abilities to capture images reflecting the theme ‘Railways – Connecting Communities Past and Present’, celebrating 200 years of the railway. 

Sue had seen the competition advertised and decided to enter with a photograph she had already taken. 

“I thought that I had a photo that I was very pleased with that I’d already had printed and that hangs in my kitchen,” said Sue. “I thought that I had nothing to lose by sending it in.” 

Overall, around 200 entries were received from across Wiltshire, the UK and abroad. 

“I was really excited when I found out I was on the shortlist, let alone when I heard that I was a winner,” said Sue. “I spread the word around my family like wildfire on WhatsApp!”  

“I love taking photos, but I am only an amateur. In my thirties I attended a camera club in the hope of learning photography, but it was not for learners, it was for folk who knew everything!” 

The winning photographs have now been installed at railway stations along the line between Swindon and Warminster, including Westbury, where Sue’s image can be viewed by the public.
