PEOPLE in Westbury are getting together to mark the special WWI centenary with a range of events from a model of a WW1 trench through to services, specialist talks and the restoration of the town’s two war memorials.
The programme of events planned by the commemoration working group starts with a number of information and display stands in Soisy Gardens next to the library on Saturday 2nd August. Then visitors will be able to see an atmospheric trench representation with people in the costumes and uniforms of the time and an exhibition of Westbury World War 1 memorabilia in the town’s heritage centre.
On Sunday 3rd August there will be a service in All Saints Church followed by the rededication of the memorial in the grounds of the church. On the evening of Monday 4th August, a hundred years to the day after the British declaration of war, there will be a similar event at the memorial on Edward Street to remember those men of Westbury who made the ultimate sacrifice.
On Friday 8th August there will be a talk on Westbury during the Great War held in the Laverton Hall. This will reflect on how the war impacted on the town and explore some of the fascinating stories behind some of the names on the memorial.
