LOCAL snooker player Ben Harrison, from Hawkeridge near Westbury, won the English Amateur Snooker Championship in Leeds this month.
Ben first beat Londoner Michael Georglou to win the Southern Area Championship, before heading to the final. There he beat Middlesborough’s Antony Parsons 10-6 to become the British Amateur Champion.
Ben was not on top form going into the tournament after crashing out of the Q School qualifiers and being too unwell for the ESBA European Championships.
His persistence paid off, however, and he is now title holder of the world’s oldest amateur snooker championship.
Ben’s sponsor is David McCance, the head of Imperial Charity, who has sponsored him personally over the last six years.
David said, “When I first saw Ben playing and making breaks of 60 and 80 consistently, I decided to give him the financial support he badly needed, because I believed he would make it some day.
“The rewards are now showing for Ben, as he brings the oldest title back to Westbury. We hope that more sponsors will now come forward for Ben.”
