MAYOR, cllr Mike Sutton has praised the community work in the town as Westbury Town Council handed out 22 grant awards to local organisations, groups and charities during an awards evening on Wednesday 23rd October.
During the evening, cllr Sutton said, “Thanks everyone for coming to this evening. It never ceases to surprise me how many people work for the benefit of the community. I think we sometimes only see those people who are materialistic, but there are so many people in this town that work for others.
“I don’t know about you but I have always found that when you work for other people, I think we are happier – I’m always happier when I work for other people. Helping others makes us better as human beings. So it’s a great pleasure for me to be here tonight. As mayor, you get to see all sorts of people at events and meeting these people makes me very proud of this town. It’s a real privilege to meet you all.”
The list of local groups who received a town council grant is: Cygnets Pre-school, Stepping Stones, the French Twinning Association, West Wilts Sailing Club, Westbury Lions, Friends of Warminster Community Radio, Group 5, Bitham Brook Cookery Club, West Wilts Special Needs Scheme, Art, craft and Natter group, Golden Oldies, Westbury Netball Club, Splitz Service, Westbury Amateur Swimming Club, White Horse Pre-School, Hope for Tomorrow, 1st Westbury Scouts, Infinity Dance, Relate, Wessex MS, Blue Circle Bowls and Alzheimer’s Support.
During the evening, there was also a talk from Ed Gairdner from ‘The Good Exchange’, a not-for-profit online database that encourages funders, charitable projects, individual donors etc to work together to fund charity and local projects.
