Westbury town centre was buzzing as the annual Wiltshire Chilli Fest drew thousands of visitors for a day of spicy delights and live music last Saturday.
The festival, organised by Westbury Town Council, offered non-stop entertainment, with music acts, fire breathers, a chilli-eating competition, and over 30 chilli product stalls.
There was also a dedicated kids’ area with a glitter bar, face painters, pottery painting, circus workshops and more, to keep young children entertained.
“It’s been a great event,” said Mayor Jane Russ. “The highlight of the day is seeing so many people of mixed ages in Westbury enjoying themselves; that for me is always what it’s about. I’m always taken by the variety of people that turn out.
“For the first time, we’ve had the food and bar stalls behind the library, which has been such a success. Everybody has said to me how much they have enjoyed being able to sit down with no hassle.”
The festival’s main attraction, the famous Wiltshire Chilli Eating Competition, captivated crowds as brave contestants took on some of the world’s hottest peppers. The competition crowned a new champion, Callum Christmas, whose taste buds of steel outlasted all others in a nail-biting showdown.
During spells of rain, spirits were lifted with performances from music acts such as the drumming band Jamma de Samba. Other acts that performed were the Band of Others, Jazz Dylan, the Midnight Alliance and 15-year-old DJ Jude Kinzett, who opened the event with a debut performance.
An undercover marquee in front of the stage offered a welcome retreat, allowing visitors to relax and enjoy the festivities regardless of the weather.
“The success of the Wiltshire Chilli Fest demonstrates Westbury’s passion for bringing the community together for a day of food, fun and support for local talent,” said Ryan Child, Events Manager at Westbury Town Council.
“Westbury Town Council extends its gratitude to everyone who attended and looks forward to making next year’s event even hotter.”
