Westbury Ladies travelled to Gordano for their last league game of the season, knowing that a win would secure the ladies’ first ever league title.
The conditions were against them with wind gusting across the pitch. Westbury received the kick off and quickly settled the nerves. Playing some good phases, the ball worked well to full back Lana Plummer for her to power through and score within the first two minutes of the game. She duly converted to make it 7-0.
Westbury, again, worked the ball well breaking up the wing, only to be halted and tackled well into touch by the home side’s defence. From the resulting line out Maisie Chester rose highest to steal the ball, a maul was set up and captain Anna Hemingway broke free to score, conversion missed 12-0.
The ladies were now in full flight and off loading the ball out of contact well. They were soon on the score sheet again as Anna Scored her second of the game, conversion missed 17-0.
With the forwards and backs now linking up well, it wasn’t long until the ladies got their 4th try of the day with Maddie Bias crossing the try line. Anna soon had her hatrick, closely followed by hooker Kerry Ackerman crossing the line with a powerful run of her own. All conversions were missed with the wind in the kicker’s face. 32-0 to Westbury.
Gordano kept fighting hard and a great break by their wing saw her set down, the conversion was successful, half time score 32-7.
Westbury gathered breath in the half time break and came back out firing. Two more quick tries from Lana and Anna, both converted by Lana made the score 46-7.
The rain began to fall and with the high winds as well, the game began to break up with several errors from both teams. Westbury weren’t done yet however; Jess Wells was next on the scoresheet with one of her trademark runs, slicing the defence in half and scoring her 8th try of the season. 51-7.
The final score was fittingly from captain Anna, taking her day’s tally to 5 tries and her 14th of the season.
Final score 56-7, a magnificent display by the ladies to finish off an incredible season. Westbury winning the league and remaining undefeated conceding an average of less than 5 points a game.
