WESTBURY Area Board handed out over £9,000 in community grants at its meeting last week.
Four groups received grants in order to support the work that they do in the community. Grants were given to Westbury Youth Football Club, the Welfare of the Elderly, the Matravers School Combined Cadet Force Target Shooting Project and the Avon Valley Running Club.
Speaking on behalf of the area board, Westbury community engagement manager Liam Cripps said, “Westbury Area Board was delighted to award over £9,000 to a number of fantastic community projects that will really benefit our local residents, both young and old.”
Westbury Youth Football Club was given £3,000. “The money will be used to increase our coaching education,” explained the chairman of Westbury Youth Football Club, Greg Coulson. “We have an ambition to become a Charter Standard Community, the highest standard that a youth club can achieve in England and this grant will help us to get the correct coaching structure to allow us to achieve this.
“By investing more money in our coaches’ education, it means that we can provide safe, fun environments for the kids to learn.
“The modern FA courses enable the coaches to not only work on the children’s technical and physical abilities, they focus on the social and psychological aspects of a person too. We want all the kids that come through Westbury Youth to fall in love with the game; some might not, but they will all become adults and Westbury Youth will help them to become creative, confident, responsible, team players when they grow up.”
The Welfare of the Elderly team were awarded £900. “We are very grateful for the grant received from the Area Board, this will now enable us to proceed with the installation of a permanent ramp that will make our hall more accessible to our older and less mobile users,” said secretary for Welfare of the Elderly, Christine Mitchell.
The Matravers School Combined Cadet Force Target Shooting Project was awarded £3299.50 to enable the cadet force to purchase their own air rifles and targets.
Avon Valley Running Club was given £2,000 to contribute towards a large and exciting project to bring a running track to the club.

The next Westbury Area Board meeting will be held on Thursday 10th August from 7pm at the Laverton Hall. These meetings are open to the public and are a platform for the community to raise issues, concerns and have interaction with Westbury’s council members.
