Westbury and District Cricket Club say they are ready for its 75th anniversary season to begin.This follows the Prime Minister, Boris Johnson’s, update confirming the long-awaited reopening of outdoor team sports is expected by 29th March.
They report, “The club has used the enforced social distancing to build its ties with the other clubs and schools in the region and with a surge of new player enquiries, there is fierce competition for places and opportunities to net and try out in the friendly fixtures arranged next month.
“Fortunately, the club is expected to field its widest range of teams covering senior men’s and women’s teams and a range of youth training and matches – the latter under its new youth coordinator, Jon Dilena.
“The opportunity to restart outdoor team sports raised a cheer at the club’s development committee held immediately after the Prime Minister’s plan was announced on the 22nd.
“The club’s five-year development strategy, laid out in January, calls for further investment in the community thanks to the sponsorship and donations through its golf day, organised by Grant Savides, with 74 players competing on 9th April.
“Allied to a host of new sponsors at the club and subscriptions managed by treasurer, Grant Willis, who completes his term of office on 1 April with the club’s deepest thanks for his years of service, the club has been able to subsidise a discount to the new season’s kit thanks to the hard work of Daniel Gill in arranging.
“With the amazing ground and square prepared by Gordon Gill, the club under chairman Neil Hawker is working to provide a fantastic summer of cricket open to all.
“This will make sure we can all enjoy a respectful return to playing and watching the games and celebrating the spirit of those who restarted cricket after the Second World War in the 1946 season.”
