STUDENTS at Westbury Junior School recently started learning a new language as they took part in the European Day of Languages earlier this month.
Schoolchildren celebrated other cultures on the 1st October as every year group took up a different language to learn about, as well as having a try of making and eating some of their chosen countries’ most famous foods.
Organiser Jan Vaughan said, “It was wonderful to see the children so engaged in learning languages. We have a number of children in the school who speak different languages at home and we always try to celebrate this. The food tasting was a particular highlight!”
Year 3 took on the challenge of learning a few basic phrases in Italian and ate plenty of delicious Italian food, as well as taking turns at making their own pizzas.
Year 4 opted for Danish and took great joy in making and devouring tasty Danish pastries.
Year 5 looked East and chose Japan as the kids learned how to count to ten and make origami boxes as well as creating koinboro (carp shaped) kites while looking at the Day of the Children festival.
Finally, Year 6 studied Mandarin – a good link with their current topic on Ancient China – and learned to write numbers to 100, mastered chopsticks and even practised Chinese calligraphy.
