A new headteacher at a Westbury primary school has reported a promising start to the school year, with pupils helping shape school rules and improvements being made to the school environment.
Darren McKay joined Westbury Leigh CofE Primary School in September. He said welcoming new early years pupils had been particularly special, as they began their school journey at the same time as he began his at the school. The school has also welcomed new pupils across all year groups this term.
“It’s been an incredibly busy and rewarding time getting to know all the amazing children at Westbury Leigh Primary School,” said Mr McKay.
Since September, the school’s new Senior Leadership Team has been listening to pupils, staff and families to help shape improvements. Pupils have played a key role in reviewing behaviour expectations and school values, choosing three rules to guide daily life: Respectful, Ready and Safe.
Work has also taken place to improve lunchtime provision and the school’s Scrapstore area, while specialists are working with staff to develop the outdoor environment for younger pupils.
“It is a privilege to know that families are choosing Westbury Leigh because of our inclusive ethos, our Thrive approach, which is embedded throughout the school, and our unique enhanced provision through our school farm,” Mr McKay added.
Reception pupils have been exploring the school’s grounds and farm, where they have welcomed Twix, the school’s new therapy goat.
Year 6 pupils have taken part in a residential trip featuring activities including kayaking, rock climbing and outdoor problem-solving.
Families interested in visiting the school are invited to attend its upcoming open events on 4th, 19th and 21st November and 6th January.
