Mayor’s Christmas message: Thanking the local community

CHRISTMAS seems to have come round far too quickly, perhaps that is because it has been yet another busy year in which Westbury has continued to support those who need our help.

For that help we must thank all the volunteers throughout the town who have given their time to help at the Churches, organisations, and clubs, those who continue to give support at the Westbury Area Network (foodbank), vaccination centres, Abraham’s Kitchen with packing and the deliveries, Crosspoint, and Westbury Link, taking so many to the hospital or doctors.

You could also make a difference to your local economy by shopping in Westbury this Christmas. A warm welcome is guaranteed when you make the effort to support the businesses in our town. Not only will the shopkeepers be delighted to see you, but the planet will be grateful for the lessening of your carbon footprint.

Don’t go to Bath for that Christmas haircut and manicure – go local; there are many salons within walking distance of the town’s free car parks who also offer gift vouchers.

Westbury has a selection of shops offering a wide range of Christmas cards and presents. There is our local pottery, craft and gift shop, and wool shop, all offering something different to the chain stores. Gifts and gift vouchers can be purchased from field sports, fishing tackle shop, and the vets, as well as the local hardware store and don’t forget the car spares shop – and all on our doorstep.

Think about presents with a long life, a bird feeder for the garden or perhaps, instead of buying something amusing but useless, a homemade gift is the answer. With many struggling financially, this festive season is going to need some serious thought. Don’t be afraid to buy second hand, it’s better for your wallet and the planet.

Use the local shops or lose them is the way we need to think and when you look at what is on offer, Westbury so often does have the answer. A thriving shopping environment means that others will think “Westbury seems to be a hap- pening town, perhaps I should set up my shop there.”

Most of all, remember to enjoy the festive season, it is not a battle to be won or lost, but a time for simple delights.

Wishing you all a very merry Christmas and a happy new year, and please keep safe and well,

Sheila Kimmins Mayor of Westbury
